Although some of the technology has been around for a long time, the term OLAP (On-Line Analytical Processing) is only coming into it's own business functional use. OLAP is a phrase, which describes a type of database specifically, designed for data analysis, navigation, querying, modeling, forecasting, and data mining.

OLAP tools empower end users to examine and manipulate company data with a few mouse clicks.

OLAP is most commonly used to perform speed-of-thought queries and complex analysis of the data via an intuitive graphical user interface (GUI). OLAP offers a natural drill-down and data rotation interface that allows users to move through layers of data represented as tables, charts or other intuitive visualizations. This term is commonly known in the industry as 'SLICING & DICING' through the data to arrive at a view that provides business context & content.

Most professionals and analysts would now agree that OLAP has become an essential component of any Data Warehousing or Decision Support System where data driven analytics are required.
